Breck Create is proud to bring Kenzie Sitterud to the Old Masonic Hall for the first time. Interactions with Time is a series of geometric works created by artist Kenzie Sitterud during the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic that explore the passage of time. The show represents a shift in materials for Sitterud, who normally works in sculpture. Adapting to the pandemic, which forced all activity indoors, the artist began working in mediums that imposed a greater awareness of time—painting, photography and performance. During this time, they developed the patience to take the pandemic day by day during a time of uncertainty, isolation, and sadness. The bulk of the show consists of a series of geometric abstract color theory paintings made over the last year and a half. Composed of seven acrylic paintings mixed with primary colors and neons, the paint’s vibrating relationship to fields of color reflects the contrast of our lives pre-covid and post covid. The other works in this collection include a series of narrative based photographs, a performance video, and a natural-wood kinetic sculpture.
Artist personal statement:
Kenzie Sitterud (b. 1986, Utah) works as a multimedia artist and designer primarily producing immersive large-scale installations and designed experiences. Kenzie’s current work explores the denial of American’s crumbling democracy and the resulting humanitarian crises. Sitterud began their creative practice in 2008 with their first installation in Denver (The Bathroom), establishing interest in conflicts between queerness and domestic spaces. Continuing this practice after moving to Seattle, Sitterud established themselves within the DIY and music communities. They returned to Denver in 2013 to pursue their BFA in Communication design from Metropolitan State University of Denver, graduating in 2016. Kenzie Sitterud currently resides and works in Denver, Colorado. – Kenzie Sitterud
