During this class you will learn power tool safety along with the correct tool to use for each application. You’ll create simple projects that will enforce your newly learned skills and will be complete by the end of class. Projects are listed below. Participants must be 15 or older to participate. The cost of the class includes materials and use of tools.

Take an otherwise unused item and make it useful again! Old sleeping bags have such great character and usable “parts”. Together, we will turn your old sleeping bag into a puff coat you can use in the colder weather. This different “format” for your old sleeping bag will make it feel “new” but is also practical. This project is called The Camping Jacket or Coleman Sacks (when made with a Coleman Sleeping Bag).

Bring your own sleeping bag or purchase one of ours for $10. Old comforters can also be used instead.

Bring your toddler to the Arts District Campus for a mini-class for mini-artists. Projects are thirty minutes long and will provide parents an opportunity to be creative with their young ones.

Each week we’ll explore a different drawing, painting or collage medium and technique. We’ll work with different papers and substrates to compose on, as well as explore the possibles of some art medium you may or may not already be familiar with. In addition to exploring techniques in different art medium, we’ll also go over compositional strategies when creating a work through combining multiple processes and material.

This class will experience clay hand building through the method of slab construction and slab manipulation, pinching and coiling to create decorative and also functional pieces. Projects will include cylinder vessels, slab boxes and pockets, tumblers, cups, mugs and plates.

This class will also explore surface decorating techniques using underglazes and sgraffito as well as texture techniques and slip trailing that will make your utilitarian pieces come to life with design.

Please note that ceramics is a multistep process. Projects created in this class will not be completed until they are fired in a ceramic kiln. Kiln firings occur every 2 weeks. To pick up kiln fired pieces after two weeks, please see a Breck Create team member at Old Masonic Hall.

While participants will not be able to complete a fired project in one class, they are encouraged to take the Ceramic Glazing class or attend a Ceramic Open Studio to complete their projects.

Learn the basics of linocut printmaking! In this class, we will learn relief carving techniques and safety. We will explore texture, pattern, and composition. You will draw your own image, carve a linocut stamp, and print it on a postcard, hat, or sticker. Take home your own hand-printed image!

Learn the art of lampworking (a form of glassblowing) by developing and honing your skills. Work with a torch and flame to melt glass rods into works of art and explore the possibilities of Borosilicate glass. Your creativity will blossom as you craft pendants, beads, marbles and so much more. Safety is an extremely high priority in this class. Please wear natural fiber clothing (such as cotton or wool) and if possible, we encourage student with glasses to wear contact lenses.

Participants must be 15 or older to participate. The cost of the class includes materials, use of tools, and other studio equipment.

What kid doesn’t like to play with clay?! Kids will learn the basics of working with clay while also exploring additional material possibilities. We’ll produce fun projects that will become treasured mantel pieces, however, they won’t be able to take projects home the same day. As is the nature of working with clay, all projects must thoroughly dry and be fired (which takes about 2 weeks). Then, you can enjoy your morning coffee out of the handmade mug your little one made for you.

Participants must be 6 or older to participate. The cost the class includes clay, tools and firing. Non-members $15 Members $12

Photo filters and apps may make a pic look better, but there’s more to creating eye catching photos than adjusting an image post shoot. Composing a dynamic shot to begin with is what will make your photos really stand out. During this light photo hike we’ll go over fundamental guidelines to photo composition, as well as tips on camera operation, whether you will be using a smartphone camera or a DSLR camera. Get some tips on photo challenges specific to when hiking! In addition to bringing cameras, students should also be able and prepared for a light to intermediate hike, with proper footwear and attire for weather, water, snacks, and anything else they may need. We will start in the classroom briefly and then walk from campus to a local trail. Anticipate 1-3 miles of hiking. All ages welcome.
